It was the best of times,it was the worst of times,

這是最好的時代，也是最壞的時代；

in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

簡而言之，那時跟現在非常相象，某些最喧囂的權威堅持要用形容詞的最高級來形容它。說它好，是最高級的；說它不好，也是最高級的。

這段話運用了排比、對偶，生活形象地寫出了當時社會的矛盾以及不同人對社會的看法,在有的人眼中,社會是美好的,但在有的人眼中,社會無比的黑暗,人們不知道他們究竟在走向何方,是地獄?還是天堂?表達了作者對社會的無奈,對現實的迷茫。

法國大革命是資產階級革命，掀起了歷史的新篇章,是進步的，所以是最好的時代，是充滿希望的春天；但同時，根據小說里的故事，法國大革命的進程也是很激進的，許多無辜的人受害，所以是最壞的時代，是令人絕望的春天。
